"It's a minor thing to me," he said.
I wonder if that's what Mr Kaczorowski would say to Ernestine Ross who as of last week remained in a coma because she was walking in the street due to un-shoveled sidewalks and got hit by a car. This has been a tough couple years for Ms Ross whose husband was killed in late 2008 on the North Side while working in his store. I think the city owes it to her family and the rest of us to keep major sidewalks shoveled.
Mr Kaczorowski, I'm not asking for bike trails, senior-citizen-owned-sidewalks on minor streets, or city steps to be shoveled. I'm asking for major thoroughfares (with speedy drivers) like Arlington Avenue, Brosville Avenue, and Bennett Street to be safe for our pedestrians. And in the meantime, I'm praying that there are no more victims from being forced to walk in the street.

I agree it is not minor, it is dangerous. While I give some credit to those whom have cleared their sidewalks some of these people have shoveled the snow in such a way that it blocks the end of their property line on the sidewalk. It makes their sidewalk passable but not past it, you have to walk in the street to get around it. Many people have managed to do whats right, many just don't care. I have a few such neighbors and they are not elderly they are young fully cable people who just don't care.
There are a lot of kids in this city that walk to the bus or walk to school. The sidewalks need to be clear for them to have safe passage as well, something I haven't heard anyone talk about. I've seen kids waiting on the street for their bus and walking up dangerous streets like Hazelwood avenue. Definitely NOT minor.
